Senator Cynthia Lummis, widely regarded as crypto’s closest ally in the U.S. Congress, announced she will retire next year, leaving Wyoming’s Republican seat open. She noted that she does not have six years left in her first term but plans to deliver a major crypto bill to President Donald Trump’s desk next year.

Lummis has long been a leading voice on digital asset issues in the Senate and has served as the inaugural chair of the crypto-focused subcommittee under the Senate Banking Committee, prioritizing crypto-friendly legislation. Her decision to step back comes as she has steered broad market-structure reforms and crypto-related tax proposals, reflecting her strategic focus on the sector.

The 2026 midterm elections are expected to be pivotal for party majorities in both chambers, with Wyoming having not elected a Democratic senator since the 1970s. Lummis has indicated she will devote remaining energy to delivering key crypto policy to the White House next year, aiming to present important legislation to the President’s desk and help maintain GOP influence in the Senate.
