Ghana has formally legalized cryptocurrency trading, bringing digital asset activity within a regulatory framework. Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiamah said Parliament passed the Virtual Asset Service Providers Act, which will govern crypto activities and oversee the sector. He stated that crypto trading is now legal and a framework to manage related risks is in place.
Under the act, the Bank of Ghana will supervise cryptocurrency activities and license cryptocurrency asset service providers (CASPs). The move aims to support financial innovation and broaden financial inclusion for young entrepreneurs and technology-based firms.
The regulatory regime seeks to balance innovation with risk controls while fostering fintech growth in the country. Market participants will operate under a clearly defined legal structure.
