The Maui Police Department warns of a phishing scam that uses publicly available information from County of Maui Board agendas. Victims are contacted by phone, email, or text by scammers claiming to represent Maui County or an affiliated board or department, and they may be told they owe fees or payments and instructed to wire funds or pay immediately. Officials remind the public that the county will never request payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, payment apps, gift cards, or similar methods. If you have shared personal information or sent money, report it immediately to the Maui Police Department at 808-244-6400 and verify payment requests through official county channels.
In mid-December, MPD officials warned about phone scams involving spoofed calls that appear to originate from the police department, with scammers manipulating caller ID to pose as law enforcement and claim an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty. Police remind the public to never provide personal or financial information or send money in response to unsolicited calls, emails, or messages, and to verify payment requests directly through official phone numbers or websites. Police urge everyone to share this information with family, friends, and colleagues and to remain vigilant.
