The Ethereum Foundation is launching a fellowship-style grant program to support Ethereum-related academic work led by current PhD students. Selected Fellows will receive $24,000 USD over one year as a supplement to their existing stipend, with 7-8 fellowships awarded in total. Proposals are due 23:59 AoE on April 1, 2026. The program is open to all disciplines, with particular encouragement for applicants in Economics, Political Science, Business, Public Policy, Computer Science, Urban Planning, and Sociology.

Applicants must be actively enrolled in a PhD program from a university or academic institute. Projects must produce formal academic research published in venues such as conferences or journals, with publication or presentation occurring at a future date. Research output must be open-access with a free and permissive license. All applications must include a written proposal in PDF format in English, adhere to the template, include an applicant profile, and provide a public repository or link to published work; decisions will be emailed six weeks after the deadline.

The RFP items include: Research Economic Models Enabled by Decentralized Trust Systems; Software-Defined Operations for Small Businesses; Programmable Institutional Design and Verifiable Governance; Settlement, Reconciliation, and Compliance Efficiency in Programmable Financial; Coordination Rails for City Governments & Urban Systems; Intelligent Capital Formation; and AI-Powered Protocol Security: Research, Auditing, and Vulnerability Detection. Proposals should align with these topics, and research outputs must be open-access with a free permissive license. Projects should deliver deployable primitives, standards, and/or scoped pilots that enable cities and other stakeholders to coordinate multi-actor processes while preserving privacy. At the conclusion of the fellowship, selected scholars may be eligible for a continuity stipend to support further development of their project beyond the initial year.
