Katherine Wu, ENS COO, announced on X that ENS v2 will be deployed solely on Ethereum’s Layer 1 network, and that the originally planned Namechain Layer 2 development will be halted. The change concerns deployment choices and does not affect the functionality, mission, or roadmap of ENS v2, according to the team, and is framed within broader debates about L2’s role in the Ethereum ecosystem. ENS said v2 will provide an independent registry for each .eth domain, enabling greater customization, while continuing to support multiple chains in the future. The company noted that it published the detailed reasoning for the decision on its official blog.

The decision centers on deployment layers rather than product capabilities. ENS reiterated that even when deployed on L1, v2 will operate exactly as designed, preserving user experience and core protocol goals. The plan remains to support .eth domains across multiple chains in the long term, including future capabilities to register on any EVM chain, while maintaining addresses on major networks such as Solana and Bitcoin.

This move forms part of the broader discussion about L2’s role in the Ethereum ecosystem. By focusing on L1 deployment, ENS aims to keep its roadmap flexible and maintain momentum, while signaling ongoing cross-chain ambitions and improvements.
