A long-running investigation led by the National Organised Crime Group exposed a New Zealand drug syndicate operating a country-wide importation and distribution network via the dark web. Over the past nine months, Operation Solana culminated in sixteen search warrants across Auckland and Hamilton, leading to eleven arrests and the seizure of methamphetamine, cocaine, MDMA and ketamine. Authorities say the group used anonymous online marketplaces, encrypted messaging, and cryptocurrency services to obscure identities and financial flows.

Drugs were being sent to New Zealand from the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States, while New Zealand Customs and overseas agencies together seized more than 200 kilograms of controlled drugs at borders destined for the syndicate. The warrants also yielded additional seizures, including approximately $500,000 in cash and three firearms, one of which was a 3D-printed gun.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Hunt said the arrests demonstrate that crime on the dark web is not invisible and that law enforcement is increasingly equipped to identify and dismantle such networks. The eleven arrestees, aged 24 to 42, are due to appear in Auckland and Hamilton District Courts on charges including importation, possession and supplying class A, B and C drugs, as well as firearm offences and participation in an organised crime group. Police said they will continue to target offenders who exploit digital platforms to traffic drugs, reinforcing safety for New Zealand communities.
