The X account of scrap-metal billionaire and NFT investor Adam Weitsman was hacked on Thursday and used to promote a fake forex trading course and a phony Clawed Ape Yacht Club memecoin. The account was recovered after contact with an undisclosed party. A statement indicated that the situation was secured and under control.
Investigators found the posts promoting two scams: a forex coaching pitch that claimed it could turn $800 into $50,000 in two hours, and a screenshot touting CAYC. One post claimed to have invested $100,000 in Solana into the project and urged followers to trade the CAYC token. CAYC’s market cap jumped over 200% to about $157,000 before plunging to $16,000 minutes later. The activity coincided with a Pump Fun-launched memecoin that started trading late Thursday.
An undisclosed party was involved in the recovery process. The incident highlights the ongoing risk of high-profile social media accounts being used to promote crypto scams.
