Metaverse platforms are rapidly transforming into immersive 3D digital cities that extend well beyond gaming and social media. Digital twins enable cities to model traffic, disasters, and energy use in real time.
Seoul has launched Metaverse Seoul for tax services, civil complaints, and virtual tourism. Dubai aims to attract more than 1,000 metaverse firms and create about 40,000 virtual jobs by 2030.
Helsinki and Singapore use 3D city twins for planning, climate analysis, and tourism. Platforms such as Decentraland and The Sandbox enable virtual land ownership via blockchain and NFTs.
AI, XR, and 5G power smart environments with immersive governance and commerce. The benefits include cost savings, sustainability, a 40% higher civic engagement, and global access.
Yet challenges remain, including privacy risks and the digital divide. Regulation gaps and high energy use also pose hurdles.
