Earlier, the National Tax Service released a press release announcing the seizure of a delinquent’s cryptocurrency wallet, during which the mnemonic codes were disclosed. The Cyber Terrorism Investigation Division of the National Police Agency said on the 1st that it has received a self-report from someone claiming to have stolen the cryptocurrency and is verifying the claim. The claimant reportedly attempted the theft out of curiosity after an online post claimed the mnemonic key was exposed, and returned the assets the following day. Police said they will verify the claim through the complainant.
The National Tax Service had exposed the mnemonic codes in a press release on the seizure of the delinquent’s cryptocurrency wallet. Crypto expert Jo Jae-woo from Hanseong University Blockchain Research Center asserted that the mnemonic disclosed by the National Tax Service led to the theft of 4 million PRTG tokens, worth about $4.8 million. However, since PRTG is an altcoin with low liquidity, the actual loss is unlikely to reach $4.8 million. The investigation will continue as authorities assess the veracity of the self-reported incident.
