Nasdaq and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), two of the world’s most influential exchange operators, are collaborating with leading crypto venues to enable the issuance and trading of tokenized stocks on blockchain rails. The move reflects a broad push toward an “everything exchange,” where multiple asset classes could be traded and settled on a unified, 24/7 digital infrastructure and could reshape how traditional equities are accessed and transacted.

Nasdaq is developing a framework with Kraken’s parent Payward to allow listed companies to issue blockchain-based stock versions without relinquishing traditional ownership or governance. The initiative aims to democratize on-chain equity while preserving conventional corporate rights, with a deployment expected in the first half of 2027. ICE, the parent company of the New York Stock Exchange, has also positioned itself in the tokenization race by investing strategically in OKX, a crypto exchange valued at about $25 billion. The deal envisions new tokenized stock offerings and crypto futures, leveraging OKX’s roughly 120 million user base to accelerate adoption across both equities and digital assets.

While tokenized stocks remain a small portion of the $126 trillion global equity market, industry researchers argue the potential is substantial as markets move toward continuous, on-chain price discovery and settlement. A Boston Consulting Group and Ripple joint report projects tokenized assets could expand to $18.9 trillion across asset classes by 2033, signaling a transformative long-term shift. Experts note that tokenized stocks could enable more efficient borrowing and lending through DeFi and other on-chain mechanisms, potentially addressing liquidity challenges that have hampered traditional on-exchange stocks. If Nasdaq and ICE succeed in linking substantial on-chain and off-chain liquidity pools, the competitive dynamics between traditional exchanges and crypto platforms could be reshaped, ushering in a new era of cross-ecosystem collaboration as much as competition.
