Former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) deputy chief Michael David Coberg was sentenced to 63 months in federal prison for aiding a cryptocurrency scam and helping a self-styled crypto entrepreneur threaten rivals and stage fake arrests. Prosecutors said Coberg used his position to act as a partner and adviser to the conspirators.

The case centers on operations led by the entrepreneur, Adam Iza, who has pleaded guilty to federal crimes and has been in custody since September 2024. Prosecutors say Coberg and Iza discussed plans to launch a venture, including payments of at least $20,000 per month to Coberg for services.

Court documents show Coberg admitted guilt in September 2025 to one count of conspiracy to commit extortion and one count of conspiracy to deprive rights. In addition to the prison term, Judge Percy Anderson ordered Coberg to pay restitution of $127,000. The sentencing underscores federal authorities’ intensified crackdown on cryptocurrency fraud and related financial crime.
