Brussels-based nonprofit European Crypto Initiative has renamed itself the European Ethereum Institute, signaling a pivot toward Ethereum as Europe’s blockchain platform of choice for Europe’s digital economy. The group says Ethereum is becoming more relevant to Europe’s public blockchain infrastructure.

It remains unclear what role Ethereum will ultimately play in the EU’s future digital economy. Marina Markežič, the institute’s executive director, told DL News that if Europe wants to take a serious view on the future of public blockchain infrastructure, Ethereum is the platform it has to engage with. She also noted that Europe’s key regulatory decisions—MiCA review, the Digital Omnibus package, GDPR reform, the Settlement and Market Integration Package, and the digital euro—will shape how public blockchains function in Europe.

The nonprofit described Ethereum as the gold standard of public blockchain infrastructure—decentralised, permissionless, credibly neutral, and battle-tested at scale. The report contrasts Europe’s approach with the United States, where crypto-friendly legislation is advancing and stablecoins feature prominently, while the EU pushes ahead with a digital euro and awaits clarity on the role of public blockchains.
