The wolf known as Neukgu, who escaped from Daejeon O-World, has been missing for four days, and public interest in Neukgu is growing into a phenomenon. As the capture has been delayed, early sentiment favored not harming him. Subsequently, memes that personify Neukgu and tell a narrative appeared on social media, followed by the emergence of a cryptocurrency and AI-generated manipulated images.

Why has the “Neukgu Escape” become such a heated issue in our society? Professor Gu Jeong-woo of Sungkyunkwan University’s sociology department said that responses to social issues have become more diverse and the ways people view issues have broadened. He added that through Neukgu, people express their perspectives with AI and various tools in their own unique ways.

A coin named Neukgu, derived from the wolf’s name, has appeared. On the 10th, Yonhap News reported that on overseas decentralized exchanges such as PumpSwap, a Neukgu coin was circulating, with 160 million units and about $20,000 in liquidity. Experts described this as the operation of the attention economy. Neukgu’s narrative of a “lonely wolf” helped drive clicks and views, contributing to the coin’s emergence.

Public sentiment toward animal rights also played a role. In a climate already fatigued by the modern zoo exhibit model, references to the 2018 incident in which a puma escaped from the same zoo and was killed have been invoked, fueling calls to “not kill this time.” President Lee Jae-myung posted on X on the evening of the 9th to cheer Neukgu’s safe return. At the same time, a Neukgu account was created on X, describing Neukgu as the lonely wolf that escaped from Daejeon O-World and posting real-time news about Neukgu while urging people not to shoot it; the account has about 500 followers. A Neukgu.com site appeared as well, but it contains no substantive content.

Many of the images related to Neukgu are believed to be synthetic. Early reports submitted to the fire department and police about sightings in the Daejeon area, including near Geojung-dong in Seo-gu, are also thought to be composites. Police and fire authorities, along with other agencies, formed a 250-person search team on the morning of the 8th to search, expanding the effort after reports that a wolf appeared near O-World. The city of Daejeon also sent safety alert texts. Yet the veracity of the photos that guided these judgments remains unclear, and CCTV at the scene reportedly did not capture a wolf. Since the initial news of Neukgu’s escape, online posts showing a wolf jumping over zoo fences and AI-generated images spread rapidly, and hundreds of related reports were filed, most of them misreports or based on circulating synthetic photos.

The Neukgu meme coin has recently circulated on overseas decentralized exchanges, gaining momentum as social media narratives recast the wolf escape in Daejeon into a broader phenomenon. Analysts describe the surge as part of the attention economy, where memes and narrative hooks drive clicks and engagement. The coin’s backstory ties to the lonely wolf motif, echoing classic meme tokens like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu. The token reportedly has 160 million units with roughly $20,000 in liquidity on PumpSwap and other DEXs. Experts say the phenomenon demonstrates attention economy dynamics at work, where narrative and virality trump fundamentals. A social-media account labeled “Neukgu” has posted real-time updates urging the public not to harm the animal and has attracted hundreds of followers. Images and discussions around Neukgu include AI-generated pictures and a wave of synthetic content, with some sites and even a Neukgu.com site appearing to offer little substantive content. The story highlights how public opinion on animal rights and information integrity interacts with modern crypto culture and shows how society uses AI tools and memes to express diverse viewpoints on current events.
