Vitalik Buterin has argued that Ethereum should embrace ossification over time, locking down core features on the base layer to minimize bugs.
He says innovation should move to Layer 2 solutions rather than the base chain.
He noted that there is a much lower rate of surprises today, signaling greater stability for Ethereum.
Buterin described ossification as a layered process: the consensus layer could lock down changes while the Ethereum Virtual Machine remains openly flexible, or vice versa.
Layer 2s already carry the bulk of Ethereum’s transaction volume.
The more activity moves there, the more space opens up on Layer 1 for settlement and security.
He added that it is healthy to shift attention away from L1 toward the surrounding ecosystem, including rollups, wallets, and privacy tools, rather than pursuing fundamental protocol changes.
