Binance remains involved in processing illicit money, despite prior Bank Secrecy Act violations and a record $4 billion fine.
Changpeng Zhao, Binance’s co-founder and former CEO, helped the exchange profit from hundreds of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency transactions linked to some of the world’s most notorious organized crime groups.
60 Minutes and former DOJ ethics officials described Trump’s pardon of Zhao as unprecedented and argued it bypassed clemency standards, with Elizabeth Oyer calling it corruption and noting troubling links between Zhao’s company and a Trump venture; Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig also commented that such ties raise concerns about integrity.
Binance holds roughly $2 billion of World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin, which could yield tens of millions annually for Trump-connected partners, while a Trump-branded tokenization project and the TRUMP memecoin add to scrutiny over crypto deals tied to the former president; Senators Elizabeth Warren and Jack Reed have raised concerns about the involvement of allegedly shady actors in World Liberty Financial’s initial token offering.
