Stablecoins are digital assets designed to minimize price volatility by pegging their value to a stable asset such as a fiat currency or a basket of assets. They provide a predictable medium of exchange within crypto markets and DeFi protocols, helping traders avoid dramatic price swings. By offering relatively stable value, stablecoins serve as a bridge between traditional finance and digital assets.

Stablecoins come in several designs. Fiat-backed stablecoins hold reserves to back each token, maintaining parity with the underlying currency. Crypto-backed options use other cryptocurrencies as collateral and maintain overcollateralization. Algorithmic stablecoins adjust supply to keep the price near a fixed target.

Investors should understand risk factors such as reserve adequacy, counterparty risk, and regulatory actions that could impact stability. While stablecoins facilitate quick transfers and liquidity, they are not risk-free, and due diligence remains essential.
