68% of American millionaires own cryptocurrency, with Bitcoin and Ethereum serving as the leading holdings. Nearly 60% hold Bitcoin, and 55% hold Ethereum, and together they account for about 70% of the crypto market cap. Meme coins Dogecoin and Shiba Inu attract significant interest, with 48% of millionaire crypto investors owning Dogecoin and 33% owning Shiba Inu. Other popular cryptocurrencies include BNB, XRP, Tether, Cardano, and Solana.
Two-thirds of crypto-owning millionaires cite the potential for strong returns as the primary reason for their crypto allocation. This aligns with Bitcoin’s historic performance over the past decade and its perception as a hedge against inflation or a store of value by some investors. Many millionaires allocate large portions of their portfolios to crypto, with about two-thirds reporting that at least 50% of their holdings are in crypto, far exceeding the commonly cited 1%-2% exposure and even the 5% upper bound for risk-tolerant investors.
This reflects a willingness to pursue higher risk in pursuit of outsized returns and diversification benefits. When you add in the additional portfolio diversification benefits, the case for making crypto part of your broader portfolio is clear.
